137 Pillars House
CHIANG MAI, THAILAND
“137 Pillars House was simply a wonderful gem - we loved the gorgeous tropical grounds, meandering paths and colonial architecture; a break here felt like we were staying at the tasteful estate of a very good friend! It has just 30 rooms... really private but with a sense of special community. The experience was superb from arrival - our butler ensured our every conceivable wish was anticipated and graciously delivered.
There were thoughtful touches throughout: from complimentary mini bar drinks, wireless phone, a great sound system, to phone and laptop chargers and truly indulgent spa products. We stayed in an East Borneo Suite - enormous for two. Apparently the top two suites feature private pools but all have indoor/outdoor showers and deep tubs for two. Yes, this place is built for romance!
If you can pull yourself away from the room, the Teak House, the “heart” of the resort – dating back to 1890, its history captured in a handsome hardcover in every room - is exquisite. There is a corner for everyone here: loved the lavish Parlour lounge. Its huge daybeds and ottomans are perfect for parties. Jack Bain’s bar is a sublime games room. Then there is a Wine Cellar, specialty Palette restaurant... We even felt compelled to use the gym downstairs overlooking the lush grounds. Nearby is an exhibition space preserving the historic artifacts found onsite. And there is also a delightful spa, using to-die-for Aromatherapy Associates products. Awarded local artists and artisans often appear in person to discuss their works over cocktails and refreshments. The staff was as happy to be there as we were. Can’t wait to go back!”

Romantic retreats, events such as intimate weddings for up to 150 people, high-end corporate product launches or incentive trips, leisure breaks for mature families or group of friends. Even a visit for drinks or dinner is worthwhile if you are in the area, though we think this is worth going out of your way for!
A lover, your spouse, favourite family members, your best friend or group of close friends, your wedding, birthday, or anniversary party. Treasured clients or associates you wish to spoil. Anyone under the “very special” category.
My favorite was the stunning saltwater pool, discretely located against a breathtaking 25 metre high Living Wall. It felt like a private grotto! Only with impeccable service at a whim. We also enjoyed a wonderful picnic hamper the hotel arranged for our day excursion to shop for antiques.
Best time to go
Chiang Mai’s weather is at its best from September to May, but even in the “wet season” outside of this, days typically start with brilliant sunshine, warm temperatures and a tempestuous afternoon storm that tends to pass after a few hours. Personally, I found the sound of the rain actually adds to the romance of this place!
No children under 16. The property is but a stroll away from the Ping River, and a convenient 15 minutes drive from the airport.
Suites from $375 USD per night, incl tax, service charge and breakfast.
