“In the 20+ years I’ve been summering in Southampton, I’d never stayed at or visited 1708 House. Always charming looking from the exterior – no matter what the season; but especially in autumn and winter with its tiny white lights and historic colonial structure. What I’d not imagined, was how truly spectacular and architecturally important the interior is! In my opinion, this is one of the country’s highest quality inns. Mahagony wood-pannelled throughout, with an impressive array of antiques (and some tasteful reproductions), very comfy, elegant rooms ranging in size but all in their handsome style. The two studies and living rooms plus the large basement game room and bar/wine cellar make for a great social capability amongst guests or those who come as friends.”

Your Hamptons base, in the charming village, under 1 mile from the ocean beaches.
Your partner – to cosy up. The small two-room bungalows on the back of the property are ideal for a couples trip or short family holiday in summer season.
We came in off the beach from a few-hour walk, and were greeted with a large, roaring fire, wine and nibbles – with pretty seasonal music playing in the background.
Best time to go
Summer is high season of course, and I adore it – but Fall through Winter are also wonderful times to visit the area, shop the villages, catch up on films and enjoy the spectacular light of the beach.
Some rooms are very small, others quite generous – so do ask about specifics when booking. The back house where we stayed in a large suite boasts a fabulous library, dining room and small marbled kitchen.
Starting at $225 a night per room, full breakfast & afternoon tea, wine, snacks included.
