Hotel LM

CARTAGENA DE INDIAS, COLOMBIA

“Exteriors in the middle of UNESCO-protected old Cartagena, interiors that are chic and modern, filled with modern art and artefacts from around the world. Absolutely charming and the best boutique in the area. For a little more local flavour, take breakfast on the rooftop terrace – or learn to whisk up some Columbian culinary delights yourself with lessons in the large kitchen.”

Great for
A small and intimate place to stay in the heart of this charming town.

With whom
Dinners and even breakfasts are impossibly romantic when taken overlooking the cathedral and the city, so go as a couple and leave the kids behind.

Memorable moment
The sunset over the town's architecture with wonderful festive music on the square remains vivid in my mind...

Best time to go
November through March are the least hot, humid and rainy

Be aware
There is no restaurant, so if you would like dinner on site, the Executive Chef will prepare custom meals or recommend local hotspots.

Room options
As its name suggests, the Baño Suite is the only one with a bath... seven rooms in total.

Service & vibe
Hip and welcoming, personal attention and on-hand with great local recommendations

Food
If you do eat in the hotel, expect a meal entirely tailored to your own tastes with traditional Columbian accents. Executive Chef Benjamin Rocha, trained at the Culinary Arts Institute in Florida before working in Miami, Barcelona, India and Thailand.

Price
From $360 nightly including simple breakfast

Costs less to go
Outside high season which is from November/December through March

To Do & See
Cartagena's old town is a UNESCO world heritage site and full of beautifully crumbling old buildings and cathedrals. Mornings and afternoons are best – it's too hot in the middle of the day.

To Eat
Good food and atmosphere at La Vitrola (Calle Baloco No. 2-01; 575-660-0711); amazing ceviche in a casual atmosphere from La Cevicheria (Calle Stuart 7; 575-664-2760); or tasty treats from Columbia's celebrity chef, Juan del Mar at any of his three restaurants.

To Buy
Find some lovely, quality handicrafts at Galleria Cano on Centro Calle

Super Services
See the scenery from a different point of view in a hot air balloon trip (www.up-away.com).

Itinerary Idea
Combine time on land with on-sea. Truly spectacular views and perspective around the tiny islands via boat.
