VILLABUENA DE ALAVA, SPAIN
“What an architectural treat! Driving up to Hotel Viura is quite the vision – like cement blocks falling out of the mountain. Very interesting. The entire hotel had an industrial feel to it that somehow managed to exude warmth and welcome. The friendly staff had a lot to do with that, as well as the design touches throughout – wood furnishings, low lamps, lush carpets. I loved borrowing a bike from the hotel and riding around the area, just enjoying the views. The surrounding town is tiny, but if you’re looking for some real quiet when you get back from wine tasting in the nearby vineyards – this is the perfect place to stay. I slept like a baby every night. If you’re at all interested in architecture, a visit here is a real must.”

A relaxing weekend of wine tasting in La Rioja.
Sipping wine on the rooftop terrace at sundown... what an amazing contrast of sights! Looking out onto the charming village, historic church and mountains from our concrete palace was so memorable, such a juxtaposed experience. The local wines were incredible, it goes without saying!
Best time to go
Definitely the fall – when the leaves are changing colors and the Rioja is in harvest.
The hotel restaurant is not up to par for the prices. I’d recommend a quick drive to the neighboring villages for lunch/dinner.
