La Résidence Phou Vao
LUANG PRABANG, LAOS
“I just loved this place! Firstly, it is in a great locations: about a mile from the city centre, so close enough to check out the UNECO-protected destination, but far enough away to avoid the hustle and bustle. Secondly, the setting. There are three acres of tropical garden surrounding the hotel - so relaxing. And the views - wow. The hotel sits on top of a hill so you overlook the city from almost everywhere. Thirdly, the hotel itself. Interiors are simple yet stylish, a mix of French colonial, traditional Laotian and contemporary design. There is plenty to keep you occupied if you decide to spend a day staying put - I highly recommend the cookery classes.”

The perfect base for exploring Luang Prabang.
Partner or travel pal - leave the kids at home.
My husband booking the five hundred-candle, ten-course romantic dinner... On a less once-in-a-lifetime note, waking up to the views over the ancient city is incredible - gives a real sense of place and wonder.
Best time to go
November - february are cooler and drier.
April can get messy in the city as its Lao New Year, when water and talcum powder are thrown about.
