“I went backpacking in Thailand as a teen and for me it has always been associated with amazing experiences – but sub par hotsel accommodation. So on my return as a fully-fledged adult, I decided to try something different – very different! Point Yamu is a cross between Thai style and Mediterranean chic. The views are tropical, but the décor has Italian themes running through it and feels very slick and sophisticated. There’s also great Italian food at La Sirena (although you must also try the Thai at Nahmayaa – amazing!).
We opted for a Veranda Pool Suite with a gorgeous four poster bed, lounge and a private pool. The pool was lovely for an evening dip before dinner, or a late-night private swim under the stars. There’s a 100 metre infinity pool for general use, but I tended to stick to ours.
On the adventure side of things – the hotel can organise all sorts of trips. Our favourites were snorkelling just off Phi Phi island, and exploring Phuket on bikes borrowed from the hotel. Make sure you stop off at Yamu and Phuket Old Town, both are well worth a visit.”

A romantic trip, although the hotel is also very welcoming for kids.
Someone who appreciates fine food and a little adventure.
Dinner by the pool at night – amazing food and views.
Best time to go
December to March are the best weather-wise, but also the busiest. Spring can be wet, but not as much as autumn.
The hotel doesn’t have its own private beach – but there is a shuttle by car and boat to a nearby island.
Daily rates from $280 for a Bay Room. (Room only, not including tax and service).
