Vana, Malsi Estate
“I was looking for a place to recharge my batteries and get pampered - Vana delivered exceptionally on both fronts. I wanted to stay in a beautiful hotel (Vana is truly a sanctuary, situated on 21 acres of forest and orchards) that also offered Ayurveda treatments, and I found just the place. The estate in Dehradun definitely feels like a getaway, but it’s easy to get to from New Dehli and Mumbai by both air and train.
All of the therapies were amazing, with specialist practitioners who were extremely skilled. The facilities were also fantastic, rounding out the experience beyond the retreat regimen. I was especially fond of the yoga program; again, the instructors were top quality, and the studio itself is gorgeous, with a tree sculpture that was particularly conducive to grounding. The strength of the staff extended beyond the wellness team and gave the entire estate a very professional, comfortable vibe. Veer, the owner, was always on hand to talk to his guests, and it was clear that, as with the entire team, he’s very committed to making guests’ stays exceptional. Mine certainly was.”

My 'kun ye treatment', in which two massage therapists worked in tandem, using hot oil and reciting mantras. Magical.
Best time to go
March through September to make use of the pool and spend more time out of doors.
They just opened (a month before my visit) and are still working out a few kinks here and there. The food was delicious and prepared with wellness in mind, but meals were less tailored to the individual than the rest of the program. I imagine this to be something that improves soon as management really cares.
How to get there
International travelers will have the easiest time flying through Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. Vana recommends using Jet Airways, as it tends to be the most punctual and comfortable of the carriers that fly into Dehradun’s local airport. The drive (about 35 km: 1 hour and 15 minutes) from the airport is prearranged and included in the retreat price.
$670 - $2,100 per night, depending on accommodations and treatments (minimum stay of 3 nights). Price includes meals and airport transfers, as well as specific retreat activities. Retreats are categorized as either “involved” or “immersed,” the latter being more expensive. Each includes corresponding extras (various massages, yoga classes, and facials) of varying length. Nightly rates go down incrementally as the duration of a stay increases. A week-long stay includes 2 additional complimentary nights and costs between $4,100 and $17,500 depending on the retreat and room.
