Baker House 1650

“This is my favorite place to stay in East Hampton. Staff is meticulous, there's so much to do and so many nooks in which to relax – a 5 minute walk to wonderful East Hampton village; spacious immaculate rooms and bathrooms, intimate surroundings and heaps of country style. Home-style breakfast is memorably delicious.”

Great for
Gorgeous long walks and bike rides, movies and shopping in cute towns, casual eateries, reading, resting, spa and sports, farmers markets

With whom
As a couple, with friends or solo. Kids generally not allowed (case by case). Rent the entire carriage house for an intimate celebration or biz off-site.

Memorable moment
Waking up our first morning in the crisp cool room, cosy in the wow-thread count sheets and opening the drapes and sliding door right onto their elegant pool.

Best time to go
June, July, September and October (August is crowded and hot... but fun if you like the local scene.)

Be aware
Rooms in the original house are comfy chinz – those front-facing the main road are loud. Breakfast is the only meal served here.

Room options
I prefer The Carriage House; recently added to the main house – more airy and spacious; the ground level rooms open direct to the pool! My main house favorites are The 'Polo' room and 'The Loft'.

Service & vibe
Friendly, casual and very helpful staff. Feels like home at the beach.

Breakfast only served here – and it couldn't be better. Specials change daily; don't miss the buttermilk blueberry pancakes.

$375 and up per night includes full breakfast

Costs less to go
Every month outside of July & August and September (outside of the film festival)

To Do & See
Beach passes with chairs, umbrellas and towels provided. Two Mile Hollow beach, stroll nearby towns of Sag Harbor, South Hampton, Bridgehampton and Amagansett; Catch a polo match!

Sport & Activity
Bikes on site to borrow, yoga at, stunning walks, horseback riding, surfing, tennis, golf – you name it – can be organized by their manager.

Spa & Grooming
At The Baker House mini-spa: enjoy fab men's facial, deep tissue massage, manis/pedis and more.

To Eat
Picnic at winery:, wonderful American cheeses at, Romantic dinner at 1770 House next door. See the area Restaurant File I wrote in 2009.

To Buy
Gorgeous kaftans, PJs and tops at, lovely boutiques the whole of East Hampton village.

Super Services will take you back from a party – so you don't drink and drive.

Itinerary Idea
If you don't live in the NY area, mix in an additional 2 nights in Amagansett or Montauk and 2 in Bridgehampton or Southhampton. Each charmingly unique and atmospheric.

Getting there
Take the bus service many Manhattanites use: The Jitney & Luxury Liner – timed right takes 2 hours from various NYC street corners; 90 minutes from JFK Airport. Alternatively, two-train change from Penn Station NYC, or drive, hire a chauffeur or fly from your local airport to East Hampton airport.
