Hambleton Hall

"One of the very top UK stays in a lovely location that's often overlooked. Sits on a verdant peninsula in the middle of Rutland Water within a tiny, sleepy village. Surprisingly stylish scene - the property at the very heart of the scene! Lovely grounds (including an outdoor swimming pool season permitting) and can't-be-faulted service.”

Great for
Post-prandial walks around the small but pretty grounds, or a more adventurous outing to Rutland Water where nature trails, cycling, sailing and water sports await - fun!

With whom
As a couple, with friends or solo. Not a great ambience for kids, but perfect for a few enjoyable adult evenings away with good food, good wine and a friendly, seamless atmosphere.

Memorable moment
Our cycle ride in the four seasons (typical England!) followed by a wonderful soak in the deep tub.

Best time to go
When you can enjoy walking around the village and getting wet in Rutland Water: May – September.

Be aware
No spa facilities – and do avoid Sunday evening traffic into London from here.

Room options
All of the rooms are country-casual-chic: floral fabrics, pastel colours and canopied beds. Book one overlooking the garden and Rutland Water. The croquet Pavillion is a romantic, free-standing suite next to the main house.

Service & vibe
Top service and we enjoyed our chat with owner Tim Hart who popped in for pre-dinner drinks. Airs are smooth and friendly rather than stuffy.

Deserves its reputation – particularly the Assiete of Hambleton desserts, a mini tastette of several delicious, sweet specialties. A sommelier is on-hand at dinner.
