Hotel La Banane

“Excellent value yet still romantic and trendy. It's not beach-side, but Baie de Lorient beach is just a few minutes stroll away. Instead, views are over the lovely, flower-filled gardens. Feels like staying at a friend's villa and everyone from staff to other guests is friendly and welcoming. This is a fab spot for a relaxed stay in St Barths, and a welcome escape from the hectic social scene.”

Great for
Laid-back beach chic in the Caribbean

With whom
Tiny and romantic — take a partner

Memorable moment
The smiles of the owners and their fun friends who pop over for cocktails.

Best time to go
The end of high season (April) has fewer crowds but the weather is still good.

With the kids
Kids welcome but it's more of an adult destination

Be aware
It's very low key and guests tend to absorb the atmosphere and start chatting. I loved it, but not for you if you prefer anonymity. The gardens attract mosquitos — pack the repellant.

Room options
9 spacious bungalows set amidst the lush flowers and vegetation. Each room is named after a tropical fruit and decorated in all-white, vintage '50s furniture and wood with accents of the appropriate, fruity colour. Very cool. Outdoor showers in the bathrooms are a nice touch.

Service & vibe
Intimate and friendly yet efficient

There's no restaurant but guests can order room service from African-themed K'fe Massaï next door.

From $350

To Do & See

Sport & Activity
Lorient Bay Beach offers a wealth of water-based activities from sailing and fishing to snorkeling. There is also tennis and golf nearby.

Spa & Grooming
Spa treatments available in-room and the gardens hide a lovely pool.

To Buy
Beautiful casual-luxe pieces from Gustavia (Les Hauts du Carré d'Or, Gustavia) and Caribbean-inspired fine jewelry by local jewelry designer Fabienne Miot (Rue de la République, Gustavia).
