La Lancha Resort

“Francis Ford Coppola has found a top spot for his resort in Guatemala, and managed to create a truly special place. Set in the jungle high above magical Lake Petén Itzá and a short trip from the Mayan ruins of Tikal. Relaxed, stylish and incredibly well thought-out, this really is the Godfather of Guatemala resorts.”

Great for
A small and intimate place to stay in the heart of the rainforest. Plenty of opportunities to explore the surroundings with well-organized guides.

With whom
This one is romantic... but kids are allowed and if over 8 do enjoy it immensely.

Memorable moment
On arrival, exhausted, sweaty and tired, we were enveloped with care and helpfulness in a personal way that goes above and beyond most small properties.

Best time to go
The dry season: December to February (NB: April and May are hottest and July to September wettest)

Be aware
It's a rainforest experience so prep well! I'd not travel to Guatemala without either a local friend's detailed guidance or a top-notch destination expert to plan your itinerary and various parts of each day.

Room options
There are 10 casitas, all decked out in a mixture of Balinese and Guatemalan furnishings personally selected by the Coppola family. The lake view casitas have contemplative and wonderful vistas across the water.

Service & vibe
Good service; idyllic, back-to-nature atmosphere

Open air restaurant under a thatched roof and with views of the rainforest. Very good authentic Guatemalan dishes such as fresh fish and grilled meats accompanied by wines from Coppola's own vineyards.

From $110 per night including breakfast

Costs less to go
Out of high season (but I don't recommend it)

To Do & See
Get yourself out into that amazing scenery... The hotel arranges tours that last several days if you really want to immerse yourself in the rainforest and the Mayan ruins of Tikal which is, of course, mostly why one comes here!

Sport & Activity
Bird watching, hiking, horseback riding, canoeing on the lake, Spanish classes

To Buy
One-of-a-kind, locally-made artistic goodies from area markets and the hotel boutique

Itinerary Idea
Coppola Resorts offer a 'Private Journey' service where they will plan your dream trip across any of their properties, including all sorts of incredible activities.
