Ojai Valley Inn and Spa

“Hmmmm... I'm not sure if it was the pristine white Spanish Mission style buildings and Med-inspired interiors, or the herb garden and lavender walkways – or perhaps it was the general air of relaxation: yoga classes and of course the sublime spa treatments. Whatever it was, Ojai is truly ahh.”

Great for
Multiple sumptuous spa treatments, healthy food, sunshine and perhaps even a round or two of golf.

With whom
Solo spa escape or with a friend/significant other. Great Mom and Daughter treat. Surprisingly family-friendly with kids activities, nannies and a 'teen spa'.

Memorable moment
The nap of all naps I had after a 90-minute massage. Can't recall ever feeling so relaxed.

Best time to go
Anytime of the year the weather is gorgeously temperate here. Can heat up July thru September.

Be aware
Some of the therapists are young and a little inexperienced; the fact that kids are permitted detracts from the zen experience for some.

Room options
308 Mediterranean-style rooms that are airy, light and comfortable without being overly 'spa-y' or modern. The Fireplace Suites are cosy on cooler nights.

To Do & See
Stay on site and try everything. There are enough activities and spa treatments to keep you occupied for much longer than your stay! Santa Barbara is just over half an hour away, and the town of Ojai is real old-style, laid-back California – worth a wander.

Sport & Activity
The resort encompasses 18-hole championship golf course, tennis courts, pools and acres of woodland to explore by foot, cycle or horseback.

Spa & Grooming
Where do I start? A full-service spa including treatments such as cranio-sacral therapy, reflexology and a whole host of 'Mind and Body' programs. The Artist's Cottage is a place to indulge your inner creative in anything from silk painting to aromatherapy blending. Very extensive and comprehensive.

To Eat
Suzanne's Cuisine in Ojai (502 W. Ojai Avenue; +1 805 640 1961) serves yummy Med-inspired dishes using local organic produce – for take-out, try authentic Mexican at La Super Rica Taqueria in Santa Barbara (622 N. Milpas Street).

To Buy
Some fabulous finds at Plush Surroundings, who stock locally-made jewelery and handmade furniture (105 S. Montgomery Street); freshest produce at the Santa Barbara Farmer's Market (schedule changes so check www.sbfarmersmarket.org).

Itinerary Idea
For a longer stay, combine with a trip to Los Angeles & Santa Barbara and/or Big Sur and Carmel on the coast.
