“This resort was one of the Conde Nast Traveler Gold List readers’ picks of world’s best hotels. I always like to travel on reader or friend recommendations and was looking for an outdoorsy break with a little pampering – so, we gave it a go. We were not disappointed. The beautiful lodge is situated in 12,000 acres in the Blue Ridge mountains. My husband is a keen golfer, and the Donald-Steel designed course was a big draw for him. It’s is built in the Scottish links style and really makes the most of the surrounding scenery (which is stunning!).

I’m happy on the green, but I also like to vary my activity and I loved the opportunities for yoga and meditation. The spa was also a favourite hang out. European therapies blend with American indian-inspired treatments, developed in partnership with the tribe who used to occupy the Dan River. The result is a selection of really interesting treatments like the native blue cornmeal and local honey body scrub or the mineral-rich sect canyon wrap and float.

Local influence is really evident through the whole property, which I loved. For example, the three restaurants serve great sustainable, organic menus made up of local produce. Perfect for an early dinner before star gazing at the onsite observatory.”
