Six Senses Zighy Bay

“This is a very unusual, privately-owned hotel group with an enviable portfolio of properties spreading from Europe across the Middle East to Thailand, Vietnam and the Maldives. 90 minutes drive from Dubai — but you are in another world. The resort, with its 82 Omani-style, pool-equipped villas, sits on its own crescent bay in total seclusion. This is a ‘barefoot’ destination with a deep commitment to sustainability, but which still provides total comfort. Every room has a butler (but of a very relaxed youthful kind) which is like having your own concierge to sort out the smallest detail. The staff are generally fantastic and the food is a clever blend of Western and Middle Eastern. Combined with wonderful treatments in the spa, you leave feeling totally calm and reconnected.”

Great for
Anyone going anywhere near Dubai who needs to de-stress

Memorable moment
Swooping down on the resort in the hotel’s own paraglider (with an instructor!) from the 2,000-foot pass above the hotel — plus, every room has a pair of beach-style bikes parked outside. The pedals even have little pads for those with bare feet.

Best time to go
Mid-summer is toasty so plan for October-March

Be aware
If you like acres of marble and glitz, you will be disappointed. This is about what Shivdasani, the owner, calls ‘intelligent luxury’.

Pool villas from $700 in summer and $1,500 in winter
