The Setai South Beach

“This Art Basel Miami fave combines the city’s Deco past with modern Asian style: sultry dark décor accessorised by fantastic ocean views. However, thankfully, it’s not an example of style over substance, with excellent amenities and super staff who somehow just KNOW when to be where (especially the concierge)... Right in the thick of the Miami scene, but inside it retains a cool, calm and collected vibe. Outside: three fab pools with comfy shaded cabanas and direct beach access — what more do you need in Miami?! Best bet for South Beach.”

Great for
Beach runs, great restaurants nearby, a lively bar/club scene, fantastic spa & gym; a top-class and relaxing stay that still stays very cool.

With whom
A sexy lover or group of friends — can either be romantic or funky — or both! Someone you know well — the bathrooms are actually IN the bedrooms...

Memorable moment
The head concierge here knows everyone, every party, and can pull every string (nearly!) I found this memorable indeed.

Best time to go
Avoid summer — far too hot and humid. Art Basel, Miami is when the hotel really gets rocking (1-4 December). Winter months can be lovely; can be chilly...

Be aware
The Shore Club next door often pumps music so loud it interrupts the calmer vibe at the Setai pool.

Room options
Choose from guest rooms or one/two-bedroom suites. Split between the smaller 1938 Art Deco building and the modern tower next door. Style is East meets East coast... Just what you would imagine: dark, sexy Southeast Asian style accompanied by killer ocean views. Love it! Music-minded teens will enjoy the Lenny Kravitz-designed recording studio in the penthouse.

Service & vibe
Typically excellent service throughout — even stretching onto the sands. Vibe is contemporary cool — a DJ descends to the pool after dark.

The Grill restaurant poolside is a good lunch spot but head out on nearby Lincoln road for dinner. Breakfast: superb.

To Do & See
One idea: the Miami contemporary art scene. This is where the Art Basel Miami crowd hang out, so get to know your subject with a visit to the Wynwood Art District. Or keep it classical with 2,000 pieces of ancient and modern art, from Europe, Asia and the Americas at the Bass Museum, right next door to the hotel.

Sport & Activity
Lap swim in the pool, jog a few steps onto the beach, get in a good gym workout. In addition, the concierge can organise all sorts of activities, from deep sea fishing to golf.

Spa & Grooming
The Pacific Rim-inspired spa is lovely and well-designed; try the two-hour Spirit of Bali ritual.

To Eat
Top pick is Mediterranean romance at sultry Casa Tua (+1 (305) 673-0973). For something casual in crab season try the “institution” Joe’s Stone Crabs (+1 (305) 673 0365). Nobu, of course has some of the best sushi in town, but gets loud (+1 (305) 695 3232), and as the name suggests, Kobe Club is top steak (+1 (305) 673 5370).
