Tutka Bay Lodge

“I can’t say enough good things about our visit to the Tutka Bay Lodge. If you’re one for nature and adventure then you MUST plan a trip to this Alaskan getaway. Perfectly secluded (there are only six lodges, so it mostly feels like the whole place is yours) and surrounded by 40,000 acres of protected land – the scene is permanently breathtaking. Once settled into our lodge (which was lovely and very comfortable), we couldn’t wait to get started on exploring.

There’s so much to see/do from berry picking to tide-pooling, morning yoga and afternoon hikes... just to name a few of our favorites. The entire staff was a real standout, young and vibrant always with a smile on their faces, and the guides were exceptional – so friendly and patient, ready to teach. The biggest surprise of all the great food they served! The kitchen was just amazing; every dish that came out was yummy. A truly special place.”

Great for
Exploring the wilderness, a real outdoorsy retreat.

With whom
A loved one or friends, family – kids also welcome, but must be of age and maturity level to enjoy themselves.

Memorable moment
The class we took at the Cooking School at Tutka Bay – an un-missable experience! Unlike any cooking course I’ve taken, the class was held in a re-purposed boat with five other couples. Super intimate in an absolutely unforgettable setting. Not to mention the food – just out of this world. There are a number of different classes to take, weekends are reserved for local focus on the regional ingredients and cuisine. To try something new and interesting, we signed up for the Catalan Cuisine course. We prepared tapas and made paella with fresh fish caught that morning. So delicious! I fell in love with churros – I’ve started making them one Sunday a month for breakfast – as a reminder and treat.

Best time to go
In 2013, the season runs May 1st through September 30th
